The Michigan Adoptee Rights Coalition Pauses Support for HB5148/49.
March 7, 2024
We are sad to report that we met with our coalition partners over the weekend and at this time we do not see a successful path forward with bills HB5148 / HB5149. We have made this decision to protect the bills from the potential of amendments that would be very disciminatory and damaging to our adoptee community. We are taking the time necessary to reassess and have the full support of our sponsors in this decision. More details may be offered at a later date.
We recognize that this news may be heartbreaking for some of you who really depended on the passage of this bill to be able to move forward in your own lives. We didn’t take this choice lightly, but we strongly believe that any law enacted on behalf of adoptees needs to be fair to all of them——not just those who meet certain criteria.
We are not quitting this fight! We at AAOM plan on continuing to foster and strengthen relationships with legislators, and the Michigan public. Stay tuned for what we will do next! One thing about Michigan adoptees… we are resiliant!
Thank you to all who donated their money and time to push our advocacy to the level we did. We have gotten farther than anyone has in many years, and we will continue to work on behalf of Michigan adoptees towards a future where our rights are recognized.
