AAOM Participates in the Adoptee Rights National Week of Action

June 5-9, 2023
Help us advocate for a bill in congress this week that would fix a loophole in current U.S. immigration law that denies US citizenship to thousands of intercountry adoptees who may face deportation without the protection of this law.

As part of the annual Adoptee Rights National Week of Action, our Michigan Adoptee Rights Coalition partner: Adoptee Rights Law Center, is calling on all adopted people and their allies throughout the country to call / contact their Congressional Representatives and ask them to support the Equal Citizenship of Children Act.

Due to a loophole in the current immigration law, thousands of intercountry adoptees are denied U.S. citizenship despite having been adopted by U.S. citizens and living in the states for most of their lives. These adoptees may now be too old to acquire automatic citizenship under the current law. The Equal Citizenship of Children Act would fix this problem, and this is terribly needed. Some adoptees have already been deported because they lack US citizenship, and others fear they could be. To learn more, please click here to visit our coaltion website.
